Xero Payroll Goes Live: QuickBooks Desktop Users Face Urgent Migration
Xero announced general availability of Xero Payroll on August 12, 2026, powered by Gusto, completing their three-year push to unite accounting, payments, and payroll under one login. For SME owners and contractors still running QuickBooks Desktop, this timing is critical.
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 support ended on May 31, 2026. On that date, payroll processing, bank feeds, and security updates all stopped simultaneously for businesses that had not migrated to a cloud platform. An estimated 3.4 million workers were affected by the payroll service disconnection alone.
