HMRC Auto-Enrollment for MTD ITSA Begins September
From September 2026, HMRC will begin automatically signing up sole traders and landlords who are required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) but have not yet registered themselves. This automatic enrollment applies to anyone with gross qualifying income above the mandation threshold.
If you are self-employed or a property landlord, you should not wait for HMRC to enroll you. Registering now gives you time to select compliant software and put processes in place before mandatory deadlines arrive.
What you need to do: If you have not already registered for MTD ITSA, sign up immediately through your HMRC online services account. Choose software from the HMRC approved list. Ensure your team understands the quarterly reporting requirement. If you need guidance on compliance or software selection, our tax planning services can help you prepare.
The current mandate applies to sole traders and landlords with turnover above £50,000 from April 2024. From April 2028, the threshold drops to £20,000. Acting now positions you ahead of future changes and avoids penalties for late enrollment.
